Now is school holiday in Malaysia. During this long holidays it is always used for circumcision ceremony for most of Malay Muslim boys from the age of 7 to 12. Circumcision, in Malaysia we call it bersunat or berkhatan, is the removal of foreskin or loose sleeve skin covering the end of the penis.

Why Circumcise?
For some people, circumcision is a religious requirement as in Muslim and Jews, whilst for others it is a social indicator marking a boy’s progression into manhood. There are also strong medical reasons for circumcision such as to prevent HIV, or maybe other reason is to have a better sex performance.. haha i dont know, i never have sex with that foreskin, kui kui kui.

One of the thing that make us fear was the foreskin is too tight to slide back over the whole glans. We had been advised by older boys who had already been circumcised to loosen the foreskin from the shaft so that the circumcision would be less painful. They told if the foreskin was still tight, the Tok Mudim would have to slit the foreskin lengthwise in several places, before cutting off the foreskin. So we did. Arghh.. so painful mannn!

I learn from the veteran on how did they circumcise in the traditional way. On the day of the ceremony, they were asked to have a cold bath to shrink that part and then were dressed in Malay attire, like Baju Melayu and sarong. They were paraded to the mosque and gathered there with several other boys.

There was a banana stem placed in the mosque. They sat astride of the stem in front of Tok Mudin or the circumciser. They lift up their sarong to expose his penis. The Tok Mudin then toyed with their penis until it was semi-erect, pulled the foreskin forward and slipped it onto the forceps, recited some Quran verses and then with a swift movement cut the end of the foreskin that was sticking out the other side of the forceps with a sharp knife.. without anesthetic …. gezzzz!

My experiance is quite different where I did it in modern way, back in 1983. I laid on the bed in the clinic, my mum stood beside me to cool me down. The doctor injected with anesthetic to the shaft, it was pain mann. Then the doctor pulled the foreskin and slipped in onto the forceps.

Typical procedure – circumcision

Then, I felt something cut my foreskin. I don?t know what instrument it was. It could have been a scissors, a razor blade or a knife. The foreskin removed from the shaft.

I saw blood but it was no pain at all. The doctor wrapped my cut quickly with a cloth to stop the bleeding. Soon after that he stiched the cut. Once finish, I pulled my sarong up as I walked, so that it would not touch the wounded organ.

Back home, my main problem was that thing always stretching itself. This made me scream in pain. I dont know why that thing will happen while ‘it’ still sick. I asked my friend how to deal with it.. haha. Then he said, get the coconut shell and use it to knock the kneecap. Keep knocking until the thing goes down again.

Well this is my sweet memory where brought me to my manhood world. If possible I want to do it all over again.. hahaha. To the young boys outside there, dont worry it wont harm you and to the girls, watch out!!

Ini lah yang memisahkan saf lelaki. Bebudak yang belum berkhatan ni dianggap masih ‘tidak suci’ dan perlu duduk di saf belakang.

Bermulalah pengalaman gatal dalam hidup seorang budak lelaki..

In my honest opinion, I think it’s unfair to put a minor thru this as it hurts and being a mother I feel for my lil one. Maybe the best time to do it is actually right after the baby’s born and not when they are mobile and know wut is pain is all about…. kinda inhumane dun you think so apart from the religious requirement??
